Are you ready for Middle School?

Posted Date: 03/20/25 (04:39 PM)

Good Afternoon Grade 5 Families,

We wanted to provide you an academic update of what our 5th graders are learning now in literacy and share some important Middle School readiness information.  In an effort to continue to prepare our SSS students for Middle School success, we contacted CHMS to ask them the most important skills our kids will need to be successful, independent and self-aware learners.  Here is what they said:

1) developing/enhancing self-regulation skills
2) learning to take accountability for your actions
3) importance of responding peacefully to everyone
4) being able to organize yourself across 5 different classes with 5 different teachers
5) THRIVE while learning (Track the speaker, Head up, sit tall, Refer to the learning target, Inquire (Ask and Answer Questions), Value yours and others learning time, Evaluate your success.)

In case you were wondering what our fantastic 5th graders are learning now in ELA ... here is what they are doing!

In Unit 3, students will read various texts and other resources to build their background knowledge on Human Rights Activists.  Students will use what they learned in the last unit to continue to strengthen their understanding around the determination and perseverance of certain people in history. Students will compare information on the same topic across multiple sources while thinking critically and putting their thoughts on paper.

The unit our kids are in now is similar to the content that was recently assessed on our Grade 5 informational IAB taken last week.  As you can see we had 40% of our students scoring in the green (at or above range) and 65% scoring near or at grade level.  We know when our students put in 100% of their best efforts, stay focused on their tasks, and continually track their teacher so they can deeply learn this essential content - our kids will learn amazing things!  Thank you for checking in exactly how your child is doing, in relation to grade level learning, during this week's conferences.  We appreciate you, the hard work of our team, and our collective partnership.
